Broadway takes a bow as Tonys sealed with a kiss

Tonys host Sean Hayes opened the ceremony with a bit of political humour by welcoming "any closeted right-wing politicians watching the show in secret".

He also shared a warm moment with his Promises co-star, Kristin Chenoweth, that doubled as a riposte to a Newsweek writer who questioned whether openly gay men like Hayes could play love-struck straight men like his character in Promises.

"I just wanted to say, break a leg, you're gonna be great," Chenoweth said - after which the two looked longingly at each other, and then exchanged a long, smouldering kiss. – The New York Times

Katie Finneran said what inspired her Tony-winning perf on "Promises, Promises," was the kudosfest. "It was watching the Tony Awards. It was really about watching it on TV, the Broadway shows."

Finneran said she felt a part of the first act, though her character doesn't come on until the second. "I have a toilet connected to the first box in the house, so I can actually watch the show from my toilet. I call it a view from the loo." – Variety

Broadway set to fete the best with Tony Awards

This year's 64th annual Tony Awards will be hosted by Will & Grace star Sean Hayes, who is nominated for best actor in a musical with Promises, Promises. Celebrity presenters will include Katie Holmes, Angela Lansbury, Cate Blanchett, Antonio Banderas and Laura Linney.

Hayes, a gay actor who was at the centre of a recent controversy when a Newsweek magazine writer criticized his portrayal of a straight character in Promises, Promises, told reporters in a conference call that he and co-star, Kristin Chenoweth, will perform at the Tonys, but he did not give away details.

He said that Tony producers had planned numbers from several shows and that Green Day would perform, but he did not elaborate or address the Newsweek controversy. – Reuters
